Description:

Length: 32 - 38 cm
Plumage general green. Forehead, lores, cheeks and crown blue. Ear-coverts blue. Periophthalmic ring white. Innerparts of tailfeathers appear maroon colored.
Bill: Upper mandible white with a black tip; lower mandible black.
Legs fleshy colored
Iris light red
Differences: In T.a. haemorrhous the blue color is lighter while the maroon of the tailfeathers is stronger. Also the lower mandible is white. T.a. neoxena is like T.a. acuticaudata but much smaller (37 : 32 cm). In T.a. neumanni the blue extends to the neck. Ear-coverts are green. All over the green color is darker. Flight feathers are longer than in other Thectocercus. Lower mandible is white. T.a.(?) like T.a. neumanni but with black lower mandible.

 

Habitat:

Open forests and savannah lands.

 

Nutrition:

Fruits of Mangos and Cactus, also seeds and blossoms of Ceibo-trees.

 

Breeding:

In the southern parts of the range (T.a. acuticaudata) season starts in Februray, later in the northern parts (T.a. neoxena)
