Hand-Feeding

It looks easy enough. And it can be. Have confidence in yourself to raise a happy healthy baby bird.

What all does it take to hand-feed a baby bird?

This Love Bird baby is only 2 weeks old in this picture. I am using a 10cc syringe, but the baby is only being feed about 4cc at every 5-6 daily feedings. As the baby grows the more food it can hold in it's crop. I will also eat only 3-4 times a day until weaning begins.

"The Crop"

The crop is a storage sack located in the front of the bird. It holds all that the bird eats. As you can see by the bulge on the front of this baby he has just been fed, and he will not need to fed again for at least 4-5 hours.

Have you ever seen a baby bird in the wild? They always have their mouths open crying for food. The baby's parents regurgitate their food into the mouths of the babies.

Always check the temperature of the food before you feed the baby bird. Food to hot will burn the inside of the crop and could result in the death of the baby. Or food to cold could not digest properly causing harmful bacteria to grow, and if not treated promptly could also result in the death of the baby.

It really isn't as hard as it sounds to hand feed a baby bird, but the dedication that is required.

Be careful when buying a baby cockatiel. If you don't know how to hand-fed you could end up with a sick bird or a dead one. Ask the breeder if the baby is fully weaned. If the breeder is a reputable one they will be honest with you. I do sell unweaned babies, but only to those who can prove to me that they know how to hand feed. We teach hand feeding here at the Avairy, and we are working on a video on proper techniques of hand feeding, that video will be an image in a real time format so you can view it or download it from here.If you have any questions please feel free to ask me via E-mail.
